I just attended a fascinating talk on Hornbill Research & Conservation in Thailand by Pilai Poonswad of Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand. Interestingly, she was a microbiologist! She covered a broad sweep of topics including biology, ecology, management and conservation. It is inspiring to see a researcher go the whole route right down to community-based conservation which knits the community's needs to that of the forest and wildlife. She coordinates the Hornbill Research Foundation which has provided an explosion of research, education and conservation projects in Thailand. She peppered the talk with humorous interjections that kept the audience laughing throughout. The work can get dangerous as the area is host to other wildlife - big and small. One student appears to have a resident Asiatic bear in his hornbill site. He broke his arm the first year and cracked his head the second - just from running away! I gather he even might have post-traumatic stress disorder for cannot cope with the mention of bears. He has been allowed to consider working in some other area! She had her serious moments too and is an excellent speaker. Some familiar faces from Nature Society (Singapore) attended the talk - they had been up to her field sites. You can help by adopting a hornbill nest in situ. |
