Molecular Study of Emerging Shrimp Pathogens in Thailand

Thailand has been the world leading shrimp producer for many years. However, our leader position has been challenged by economic losses due to shrimp diseases. Not only has the industry been suffering devastating effects of recurring infection by White Spot Syndrom Virus (WSSV) and Yellow Head Virus (YHV), but it is also threatened by new and emerging pathogens including toxin-producing Vibio parahaemolyticus that causes early mortality syndrome (EMS) (Jyoti et al, 2014), microsporidian Enterocytozoon hepatopenaei (EHP) (Tourtip et al, 2009 and Tangprasittipap et al, 2013) and covert mortality syndrome virus (CMNV) Our laboratory aims to determine the molecular basis of pathogenicity of the aforementioned pathogens, particularly EHP and CMNV, to develop therapeutic tools to combat these diseases. We collaborate Dr. Kallaya Sritunyalucksana from Center of Excellence for Shrimp Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (CENTEX SHRIMP) and Dr. Grant Stentiford at Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas) in the United Kingdom.
