Current Research Interests

Research activities in our laboratory involve 3 major studies:

1. Cell & Molecular Biology of Cancer:  I am interested in the roles of cell-cell and cell-substrate adhesion proteins involved in the process of tumor invasion and metastases. My current investigations are the studies on the role of a tumor associated antigen in immunopathogenesis of cancers, the role of intracellular molecules associated with cell-ECM interaction in mediation of tumor progression and the interplay between integrins and MMPs activation mechanism in cancers by using immunolocalization, molecular biology and cell culture approaches. In attempt to inhibit cancers, my research group is experimenting on anti-tumor formation, anti-tumor progression and metastasis agents using signaling inhibitors and natural extracts from plants. Additionally, we have currently set up in vitro models for studying and screening of cytotoxicity and genotoxicity effects of natural products used in industry and medicine.

2. Dengue vaccine development and anti-dengue drugs: My laboratory has constructed several mutants of 5NCR dengue virus from cDNA clone of dengue-2 (16681), using molecular genetic engineering approach. The derived viruses were characterized in cell culture, mouse and mosquito vector (Aedes Aegypti) and also evaluations of the mutants for RNA genetic stability, vertical transmission in vector, in vitro RNA transcription and protein translation. The goals of these studies are to reveal the molecular structural-functional relationship of Dengue 5NCR in viral replication and to improve dengue vaccine development. We have selected a few attenuated candidates that have high potential for vaccine to detail study on various aspects of the immune response and immunopathogenesis of dengue hemorrhagic fever (DF) and dengue shock syndrome (DHF/DSS). Recently, weve engineered the green fluorescent protein (GFP) gene into our dengue viruses to study viral activities in cells. Also, to establish stable cell lines that express dengue proteins with GFP reporter protein. This cell line is using as a high-throughput screening assay in searching for the anti-viral agents or inhibitors of dengue replication by medicinal plant extracts.
