tiger shrimp, Penaeus monodon, is the large-sized shrimp
commercially cultivated in many countries in Asia. Several
problems concerning cultivation of this species, especially
disease outbreaks and the industry still requires the production
of domesticated stocks. My main interest is on domestication and
selective breeding of this shrimp species. These include
disease screening by DNA-based technologies, such as by
polymerase chain reaction methods and by in situ hybridization.
Selective breeding program requires genetic studies, with

We are in a
researcher group called Center of Excellence for Shrimp
Molecular Biology and Biotechnology or Centex Shrimp, which is
composed of more than 50 researchers working to solve shrimp
problems. Besides the domestication and selective breeding
program, my research activities are directed by problems posing
on shrimp industry as well. Most of the problems are disease
outbreaks, such as white-spot disease, yellow-head disease,
etc. In-depth research in the mechanisms of virus-shrimp cell
interactions in thus one of our major activities. Our interest
are therefore to find ways to solve problems in the field, as
well as to perform basic researches aiming at discovering
mysterious mechanisms of the infectious process in shrimp.
